According to initial estimates based on images from the European environmental satellite Sentinel-2, the devastating fires on July 2, 3 and 4 in the southeast of Kefalonia have burned about 25 hectares of forest land.
The burn-up area was calculated by the services of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr. The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) estimates that around 37% was arable land, 47% was land with low vegetation, and 16% was forests and shrubs.
Recall that yesterday, 5/07, Copernicus was activated to immediately map the area in Kefalonia, which was destroyed by a fire that broke out on Saturday 03.07. The corresponding order came from the Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias.
As “Russian Athens” wrote earlier, a little over a month ago in Alepochori similar large-scale fire broke out, in which more than 25 hectares of forest land were burned down, turning a tourist place to ashes.
