"Don’t believe your eyes": What’s happening to food prices

According to ΕΛΣΤΑΤin May this year, inflation in Greece recorded a new decline, to 2.8%.

In addition, while the food category continues to burn consumers’ pockets, the relative figure is up compared to April, according to ΕΛΣΤΑΤ.

On a monthly basis, compared to April, the total consumer price index (CPI) showed an increase of 0.4% compared to the growth of 0.7% recorded in the corresponding comparison of the previous year.

At the same time, the average CPI for the twelve months, from June 2022 to May 2023, compared with the same indicator (the period from June 2021 to May 2022) indicated an increase of 7.8% compared to an increase of 5 .3% noted in a corresponding comparison for the 12 months from June 2021 to May 2022 with the twelve months from June 2020 to May 2021.

Recall, as we wrote earlier “Athenian News”, there is an obvious paradox: the authorities are declaring a fall in inflation, while the prices of groceries on store shelves are rising. Dairy products, cheese, detergents, stationery, oils in May 2023, they sell for almost 20% more than in the previous two months.

While the prices for agricultural products on the world market are steadily falling, the prices on the Greek counters are still rising. Consumer advocates say this is gross speculation. In a previous report, INKA President Mr. Georgios Lechuritis stated that “every day we see an increase in the price of products, whether they are called oils, legumes or cold cuts and cheeses.”

Estimated prices for some products (February-May):

1. Vegetable oil (1 litre): €3.60 – €4.83
2. Olive oil (1 liter): €8.30 – €9.85
3. Feta (1kg): €14.90 – €16.25
4. Detergents: €11.88 – €14.85
5. Diapers: €24.95 – €27.90.
