Free wi-fi in metro tunnels

Residents and visitors of Athens will be able to use the internet for free in metro cars when the OAΣA project is completed.

The Athens metro adheres to the standards of the most developed European cities in order to improve the quality of services provided to the passengers of the capital. In addition to the major metro projects (line 4 and extension of line 2 to Ilion) that are underway, OAΣA is promoting the installation of equipment to provide mobile signal and Wi-Fi both in stations and in tunnels.

The first pilot application will be placed at 3 stations of line 2, namely in its southern part, from “Agios Dimitrios” to “Elliniko”. The pilot program is expected to be completed in the first half of 2023 (i.e. by June) as stated in the report Υπερταμείου για τον Όμιλο ΟΑΣΑ for the third quarter, published in December 2022.

It should be noted that the project is directly related to the contract signed last month between ΣTAΣY and Cosmote and Vantage Towers (the joint venture company of Vodafone & Wind that operates mobile antennas) to install the necessary equipment for coverage 4G/5G networks.

A pilot program to install the necessary equipment at 3 stations will provide useful data for the implementation of the project to install Wi-Fi at all stations on lines 2 and 3, which will be completed in about 2.5 years.

The groundbreaking project is seen as particularly important as it is expected to significantly improve passenger mobility, with free internet connections and free calls at metro stations and carriages.

The development of the Wi-Fi network in the metro is part of the project of the Ministry of Digital Governance “WiFi4GR – Development of Public Wireless Broadband Internet Access Points”, which will deploy 2,500 Wi-Fi hotspots throughout Greece.
