When 4,434 different cheeses from 42 countries “gathered” in one showroom, you can’t help but feel the excitement. But not only! There is such a cheesy smell here that … just salivating.
An intoxicating combination of ripening dairy and friendly competition was showcased at the UK Convention Center where 250 international judges sniffed, handled, mashed and tasted the cheeses to decide who would take the crown of the World Cheese Awards 2022.
This year’s winner, Gruyère cheese from Switzerland, was chosen by a panel of top judges after a vote was taken.
The jury selected 98 super gold champions, followed by the top 16.
The judges described Le Gruyère AOP surchoix, presented by Swiss cheesemakers Vorderfultigen, as “a truly exquisite artisanal cheese” that melts on the tongue and has hints of herbs and fruits. It was called “Cheese with great taste”. In second place was Gorgonzola Dolce DOP, a soft blue cheese (brie type) made by De’ Magi (Italy).
