Macedonian halva celebrates 100th anniversary


Macedonian halva, a traditional Greek product required on Clean Monday, celebrates its 100th anniversary. The company’s management sends a wish to consumers: “Clean Monday continues to unite us, gathering each generation at one table.”

For 100 years, Macedonian halva has been produced according to the same traditional recipe, which the Haytoglu family brought from Asia Minor. Using the best sesame as raw material, which is ground in millstones and produces the best “Macedonian tahini”. Macedonian halva is fermented by hand, maintaining its unique taste and unrivaled quality unchanged over time.

This year, consumers have the opportunity to enjoy a delicious and healthy product, which has received a new logo and packaging in order to “refresh the image”, taking into account history and traditions, but not forgetting the long journey traveled from 1924 to the present day.

The main ingredient of Macedonian halva is tahini (crushed sesame). First, the sesame seeds are placed in a container of salted water. Once it has swelled, it is washed, baked and ground to make tahini. Classic halva is made from ground powder, caramelized syrup and nuts such as almonds, pistachios or chocolate.

Thanks to the sesame seeds and nuts it usually contains, halva ranks high on the list of foods with high nutritional value. That is why it is one of the main products of Lent. Its use helps:

  • good functioning of the cardiovascular system, as it contains polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids.
  • metabolism, thanks to the coenzymes and vitamins it contains.
  • good functioning of the nervous system, thanks to vitamins B1, B2 and niacin.
  • strengthens the immune system and maintains bone mass, as it contains calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

Due to its selenium and vitamin E content, it is considered one of the most antioxidant products. The calorie content of halva ranges from 350 to 450, depending on the content of nuts or chocolate per 100 grams of product.
