Poland’s ruling party is stepping up its rhetoric by threatening to remove Ursula von der Leyen as head of the European Commission in response to a 35 billion euro deprivation.
As the British The Guardianin the event that 35 billion euros are not allocated to it to fight the pandemic, Warsaw promises to take a number of “effective” measures: sue Brussels, veto all initiatives EU and secure the dismissal of Ursula von der Leyen as head of the European Commission.
The publication quotes Krzysztof Sobolewski, general secretary of the ruling Law and Justice party:
“If the EU executive tries to pin us against the wall, we will have no choice but to pull all weapons from our arsenal” and retaliate “tit for tat”.
Recall that the “exchange of courtesies” takes place after the support of the highest court of the EU, the European Court, of the proposal of the European Commission to fine Poland 1 million euros a day. Such punishment threatens because in 2021 the Constitutional Court of Poland confirmed the priority of the country’s constitutional norms over the legislation of the European Union.
However, Warsaw refuses to pay the millionth fine imposed by the EU court because of judicial support for the reform. The Polish authorities have threatened not to pay contributions to the EU budget and to veto European decisions. In response, the European Commission decided not to allocate the previously promised 35 billion euros to Poland to combat the consequences of the pandemic.
