Thessaloniki: a man beat a municipal worker for waking him up with the noise of a garbage truck

The victim of the attack was a cleaning sector worker in the municipality of Cordelio Evosmos in Thessaloniki.

According to thestoday, the incident occurred at 05:30 am on Saturday. At first, a local resident allegedly went out onto the balcony and began to shower curses on the municipal workers involved in garbage collection. But the citizen did not stop there, but left the house and threw himself with his fists at one of the municipal employees.

“You and the garbage truck woke me up,” the angry man shouted, according to the publication. Passers-by rushed to help the worker, trying to separate the grappling, but bruises had already appeared on the face of the victim.

Speaking to ThessToday.gr, Christos Demertzis, Deputy Mayor for Cleanliness of the Municipality of Cordelio Evosmos, condemned the egregious incident. “This is unacceptable! Utility workers do hard work every day for the benefit of citizens, for which the population should respect them, at least. The profession is quite difficult and is performed in adverse weather conditions all year round,” the official said.

Recall that in Greece a few years ago there was a tragedy: a municipal worker, an elderly woman, worked full shifts for two days in a 43-degree heat. She died from overwork at work. At the cemetery in Zographa, where the funeral of a 62-year-old worker, mother of four children, was held, officials were present.

The civic heroism of the deceased worker came to celebrate the then minister industrial reform, environment and energy in Greece Panagiotis Lafazanis. Colleagues and relatives also came to see Daniella Prelorentza on her last journey. The worker’s son dissuaded his mother from going to work on days of terrible heat. However, the woman considered it her duty to replace on par with other colleagues.

The mother of four children, one of whom has a disability, held the position of an indefinite municipal street cleaner and had a salary of about 700 euros (in 2017). Despite her age, the woman did an excellent job with the work that was vital to her in order to barely make ends meet.

After the strike of contract municipal cleaners (2017), the streets were littered with garbage. In combination with high air temperatures, this created a suffocating atmosphere in the city. Immediately after the end of the strike, municipality workers rushed to restore order in an emergency mode. And cleanliness was brought! But at the cost of the life of one of the most responsible workers …
