In the city of Irpen near Kiev, 51-year-old American New York Times journalist Brent Renault died.
The head of the regional police Andrei Nebytov announced his death by posting a photo of the journalist and an editorial certificate on Facebook.
Brent Reno’s documentaries filmed in hot spots with his brother Craig have won prestigious awards, according to IMDB. He filmed in Iraq and Afghanistan, covered the earthquake in Haiti, the “Arab Spring” in Egypt and Libya, the cartel war in Mexico.
His work has received prestigious awards, including the Peabody Award, IDA Award for Best Television Series, two Overseas Press Club Awards, two Columbia Dupont Awards and a Edward R. Murrow for work with The New York Times.
Along with Reno, another American journalist, photojournalist Juan Arredondo, came under fire. He was wounded and taken to the Kiev hospital “Okhmatdit”. The journalist said that they filmed refugees at the bridge in Irpin, then passed the checkpoint on another bridge, after which they opened fire on them. According to Juan, the bullet hit Reno in the neck.
The New York Times released a statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the news of Brent Renaud’s death. Brent was a talented filmmaker who has worked with The New York Times for many years. Although he has done material for the Times in the past (most recently in 2015), in Ukraine he did not work for the editorial office. The first reports that he worked for the publication appeared due to the fact that he was wearing a badge of a Times journalist, issued for the assignment many years ago. “
Since yesterday, March 13, the entrance for the press to Irpin is closed, said the mayor of the city Alexander Markushin.
