Sweden: new mutation of Omicron strain discovered

In Sweden, in the Academic Laboratory of the city of Uppsala, a subvariant of Omicron was discovered. It is registered with three people and named BA.2, Upsala Nya Tidning reported yesterday.

So far, there is too little data on the new mutation to make any predictions. Lab spokesman Mats Martinel says:

“We need to have much more material to understand if BA.2 can compete with the previous version.”

He believes that Uppsala may have more cases of BA.2. Due to the fact that the new subvariant requires deeper sequencing, it could simply not be detected in some infected people. It’s too early to tell how dangerous the new sub-variant is and whether it will spread quickly in Sweden. TASS.
