British authorities do not intend to consider asylum applications from migrants who entered the country illegally. Illegal immigrants will be deported to Rwanda, an East African country.
By the end of the year, the authorities plan to send at least 5,700 people there. writes dw, and the first illegal migrants to be expelled have already been detained, the Home Office reported in London on May 1.
The report says that raids are being carried out across the country to detain illegal immigrants. The ministry released photos and videos of handcuffed people being put into cars. James Cleverley, head of the Home Office, said his department was aiming to “quickly apprehend those who have no right to be here so that flights to Rwanda can begin.”
The government plans to immediately send all illegally arrived migrants to Rwanda, regardless of their country of origin, without considering their asylum claims. Rwanda has been declared a safe third country.
Asylum claims will henceforth be processed by the Rwandan government in Kigali. If the application is successful, the migrant will have the right to reside in Rwanda, but will not be able to return to the UK. The British authorities plan to begin deportations by July.
