Eurostat: Ukrainian refugees are returning home


Eurostat reports that the number of Ukrainians enjoying temporary protection in EUin some countries it is decreasing.

As of March 31, 2024, 4,211,495 people from Ukraine had temporary protection status in the European Union. At the end of February, this figure was 4,234,595. Eurostat data indicate that the number of Ukrainian refugees in EU countries is decreasing. The largest number of Ukrainians who left their homes to escape the war took:

  • Germany – 1,301,790 people (30.9% of the EU total);
  • Poland – 955,520 (22.7%);
  • Czech Republic – 364,375 (8.7%).

In March 2024, the most Ukrainians arrived in:

  • Germany (15,210; +1.2%);
  • Netherlands (4705; +4.0%);
  • Bulgaria (3475; +7.6%).

According to Eurostat, the number of people with temporary protection has decreased in nine EU countries, with the largest decline recorded in:

  • Czech Republic (-20,700; -5.4%);
  • Sweden (-9960; -21.5%);
  • Austria (-9130; -11.1%);
  • Denmark (-5385; -14.5%);
  • Poland (-1680; -0.2%).

Among citizens with temporary protection in the European Union, more than 98% are citizens of Ukraine. Among all recipients of temporary protection in the EU, adult women make up 45.8%, children – 32.8%, adult men – 21.4%.
