12 workers have died at work in Greece in the last 23 days

Twelve workers have died in work-related accidents in 23 days, the Hellenic Federation of Technical Employees' Associations (OSETEE) said in a statement on Friday.

In 2024 alone, 31 workers were killed and 60 injured, the federation added, voicing serious concerns about the safety of working conditions in Greece. “There has been a significant increase in fatal accidents on construction sites,” the statement emphasizes.

“Industrial accidents in our country are acquiring dramatic proportions,” notes the OSETEE scientific study. The federation complained that “no special measures are being taken and there is no meaningful social dialogue to cope with the situation”:

  • March 20-April 12: 12 workers died at workplaces.
  • January 1-April 12: 31 workers died, 60 were injuredmost of them are heavy.
  • Last year 179 workers died and 287 were seriously injured in work-related accidents.

Judging by some media reports, fatal industrial accidents occur not only at private, but also at government facilities. It is worth noting that in Greece there is practically no such concept as occupational safety and health, so memorable in the USSR. Welders work without masks, workers at construction sites practically do not use protective helmets, and when asked “where are your work gloves,” they answer with a bewildered nod of the head.

If large companies still somehow try to monitor safety at work or on construction sites, then in small companies this issue has been left to chance. If the employee wants, he will take care of his safety, if not, he will work that way. Unfortunately, the above figures show that this approach helps little.
