Conference in Athens: EPP leaders supported "New Democracy" (video)

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been praised as one of the EPP's most successful leaders. At a conference in the Greek capital, leaders of the European People's Party supported New Democracy.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech on Sunday that Europe is under attack from both inside and outside and in the current climate there is no return to naivety. She also argued in favor of a common European defense:

“We need to accelerate European defense spending on a collective basis. But just as war in Europe is not a thing of the past, defense cooperation must be a sign of the future in the European Union.”

Euronews journalist transmits from Athens:

“The EPP's (European People's Party) leadership at the New Democracy conference in Athens was by no means indirect. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been praised as one of the EPP's most successful leaders and as an example of how populists can be defeated.”

Previously Vice President of the Commission EU Margaritis Schinas said that Europe needs “Kyriakos and Ursula, not Putin’s friends.” For his part, the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, thanked Greece, since without its support his country would not have become a member of the EU exactly 20 years ago. Closing the conference, Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for a fight against disinformation to ensure that lies are not part of the election campaign, and criticized the opposition – both right and left.
