Monument dedicated to the 57 victims of the Tempi tragedy

The municipality of Athens responded to the mayor's proposal to build a monument to those killed in Tempi: “We want it to be a symbolic gesture of support.”

Haris Doukas said in a statement, quotes newsbeast.gr:

“On 28 February 2023, the greatest railway tragedy in the annals of Greek history occurred at Tempi. 57 of our people died, most of them young people, another 85 were injured. From the first moment, the relatives and friends of the passengers have been waging an absolutely unequal struggle with the loss, while resolutely and persistently demanding the revelation of the truth, justice and justification of their people.

From the very first moment the sad news spread, the entire country identified itself with these people, silently mourning the losses, unimaginable suffering, mistakes, omissions and the destructive pathologies of an inadequate state apparatus.

More than a year after the tragedy, the Municipality of Athens, out of respect for the victims and their relatives, wishes to perpetuate their memory and join the voices of those who demand a safe and just state.

Therefore, we promise that a monument will be created that will honor the memory of our fellow human beings and preserve the need for truth, justice and security. The choice of location, as well as the type of monument, will be decided jointly with the competent services of the municipality, in agreement with the Association of Relatives of the Victims, with which a meeting has already been held.

We hope that this initiative of ours will be a symbolic gesture of support for the personal and collective pain caused by the accident, and also demonstrate that the Municipality of Athens is involved in the fight for truth, justice and safety.”
