Greek police and intelligence services are on alert after the terrorist attack in Moscow


Greece's police and National Intelligence Service are on alert following last Friday's terrorist attack in Moscow and growing concerns among Western security and intelligence agencies.

Greek Police and National Intelligence Service (ΕΥΠ) made a joint decision strengthen checks at entry points into the countryin and outside migrant detention centers, media reported on Wednesday.

One cause for concern is that the Islamic State of Khorasan, or ISIS-K, has recently been trying to expand its activities from Central Asia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Europe, the kathimerini newspaper said, citing sources.

Notably, even before the deadly attack on Moscow's Crocus concert venue, United States officials warned that ISIS-K retained the ability and willingness to attack targets of US and Western interest. In addition, in December last year, the authorities of Austria and Germany thwarted terrorist plans attackswhich were planned primarily by citizens of Tajikistan acting on behalf of ISIS-K.

According to the news site newsit.gr, immediately after the terrorist attack in Moscow, additional security measures were taken in Greece. In cooperation with various police services, the National Intelligence Service has strengthened controls on the borders of Greek territory, and security measures at potential targets are also expected to be strengthened.

Relevant sources of information were used, both from Greece and abroad. There is a constant exchange of information between state intelligence agencies in order to identify at an early stage any additional terrorist organizations and individuals maintaining contacts with ISIS-K who enter Central Europe.
