The municipality of Almiros has made a rather strange decision by issuing a controversial announcement informing citizens that it is prohibited… to feed stray animals.
And although we understand that the problem of pack attacks on citizens needs to be addressed, questions arise about the consequences of such a ban and what will happen to stray animals when no one wants to feed them.
In particular, the responsible deputy mayor, Yiannis Ekizoglou, explains in the announcement that it is prohibited to feed stray animals both near houses and outside them, incl. in crowded public places, since, as noted, on the one hand, flocks are created, on the other hand, homeless animals receiving food in these places consider them “yours” space and acquire aggressive behavior towards citizens passing by.
Violators, the notice said, will be punished with the prescribed fine.“It is up to all of us to help solve this important, chronic problem in our municipality.” – said the deputy mayor.
PS The problem is well known and understandable, but the method of solving it raises serious questions.
