According to the Ukrainian Ombudsman, 2,800 dead military personnel and body fragments have been identified to date. The search for their relatives continues.
At a meeting with relatives of the missing, Dmitry Lubinets said that the process of repatriation of bodies is underway, but not all have been handed over yet, so some people cannot find their dead or missing family members.
The Ministry of Health reports that the process of finding relatives of the identified soldiers is ongoing so that they can be buried. Regarding the long period of identification of unidentified bodies, Dmitry Lubinets noted:
“On this problem, I contacted the Ministry of Health back in 2022 and made proposals regarding increasing the number of bureaus, medical personnel, refrigerators and other equipment. The same topic was discussed at the beginning of 2024 at the coordination headquarters.”
Members of the families of deceased servicemen were told how much time it takes to identify the bodies, notify the families of the deceased, operate the DNA database, etc. the Ombudsman emphasized:
“Ukraine is most interested in returning the bodies of our fallen soldiers. Relatives have every right to honor a fallen soldier.”
The collection of DNA samples from relatives of missing persons abroad continues and will continue as long as necessary. Relatives of missing persons can donate DNA in six European Union countries and Turkey:
In Poland: Warsaw – Aleje Jerozolimskie, 179; Krakow – Pavia, 5; Gdańsk – Aleja Grunwaldzka, 415; Wroclaw – plac Grunwaldzki, 22.
In Germany: Berlin – Am Treptower Park, 14; Cologne – Händelstraße, 25-29.
In Spain: Madrid – C. Adolfo Bioy Casares, 5; Valencia – Xàtiva metro station, parking opposite the main entrance to the Estació del Nord station.
In Italy: Milan – Via Eugenio Curiel, 25.
In the Czech Republic: Prague – Michelská, 1552/58.
In Slovakia: Bratislava – Mlynské nivy, 5A.
In Turkey: Istanbul – Londra Asfaltı E-5, parking at the Airport shopping center.
Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Leonid Timchenko noted:
“Our international partners also help experts in the process of identifying bodies. This is the International Commission on Missing Persons. We collaborated with them throughout 2023, and during this period we collected samples from more than 400 Ukrainian citizens abroad. With the help of such cooperation, about ninety coincidences.”
Currently, there are about 17 thousand Ukrainian citizens in the Unified Register of Missing Persons.
