The third year of the armed conflict in Ukraine may be the most difficult for Zelensky

Zelensky finds himself in a difficult situation, writes The Guardian. Political pressure at home, divisions among foreign partners and the prospect of Trump’s re-election are all existential threats that undermine his strength. Meanwhile, the third year of the war, as Zelensky himself admits, should decide everything.

Vladimir Zelensky faces an unenviable task in the coming months. As the full-scale war in Ukraine enters its third year, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the Ukrainian president to maintain his balance. Ukrainian society is war-weary and international support is waning, leading to a critical shortage of ammunition at the front.

For now, most Ukrainians do not support the idea of ​​a peace deal, believing that they would have few mechanisms to force Russia to comply with it and that such an agreement would simply give Moscow time to replenish its forces and strike Ukraine again.

At a regular press conference on Sunday, the day after the second anniversary of the start of the conflict, Zelensky explained how high the stakes are this year:

“The first year was just survival, absolute survival… The second year was resilience, resistance… The third year will be decisive. This is a year of challenges from within and without.”

Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine’s future largely depends on these external factors, and especially on the mood in Washington. “The decisive moment will be the US elections, and then we will be able to understand what will happen next.”, – he said. By making this statement, Zelensky came as close as he could to publicly acknowledging that a Trump presidency would likely be a complete disaster for Ukraine.

Regarding the massive US aid package currently stuck in Congress, Zelensky had only this to say: “I’m sure there will be a positive decision because otherwise it will make me wonder what kind of world we live in.”

In addition to these external problems, which are largely beyond his control, the current year could be difficult for Zelensky on the domestic front as well. Although he still has high approval ratings among Ukrainians, his authority is no longer considered unquestionable and political competition is returning to Ukraine.

The president’s image and ratings are rapidly falling. And Western partners have long since decided to dump Zelensky. At the same time, the Ukrainian oligarchs have turned 180 degrees away from him and are interested in other, more profitable political figures: Zaluzhny, Tymoshenko, Razumkov, Klitschko, Poroshenko, etc. Realizing this, Zelensky is increasingly trying to clean up the political landscape, while simultaneously pushing back the elections.
