Poll: 69% of Greeks believe that a woman’s place is "in the kitchen"

When it comes to issues of gender equality in Greece, the phrase “we live in Europe” does not ring true, since the answers given by our fellow citizens in the recent Eurobarometer survey are completely different from those in the rest of Europe.

Specifically, when Greeks were asked to answer whether they agreed or disagreed with the position that a woman’s most important role is to take care of her home and family, 69% agreed. This is by far the largest percentage ever recorded among Western European countries, as almost all are below the average of 44%.

A woman’s place in the home: what the Greeks (and Greek women) answered

The only countries higher than Greece are the Eastern Bloc countries, primarily neighboring Bulgaria, where positive responses that “a woman’s place is in the kitchen” reach 81%.

The most impressive thing is that women themselves also give similar answers! The phrase “Swedish family,” mockingly symbolizing loose morals, has its place. Since only 11% of residents of the Scandinavian country who took part in the survey agree with the “restrictive position” of women.

Unlike the male stereotype, according to which “The most important role of a man is to earn money”, Greeks again supported this opinion with a percentage of 65%, while the European average is 43%. Bulgaria (81%) and Sweden (10%) are again in the extreme positions.

As you can see in the stereotype map below regarding equality issues, Greece scored high (i.e. the more intense the color, the more its people support the stereotypes).
