A court in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, sentenced a 59-year-old man, a self-described “national prosecutor” And “Army General” to 10 months’ suspended imprisonment and a fine of 500 euros.
On social networks the man introduced himself “national prosecutor” and career military personnel with hunting rifles, which he intended to use to harm people. His Facebook posts attracted the attention of the Greek police cybercrime unit, which established that the 59-year-old man was part of a conspiracy theorist group active on the Internet, “Guardians of the Constitution“.
Authorities reportedly found the man in a hotel room opposite the courthouse in Thessaloniki. A stamp with the inscription was found in his car with German license plates “Prosecutor General”. The man had a rifle for which he was licensed. The authorities began the procedure for revoking the license. He was arrested on February 6, 2024.
Group “Guardians of the Constitution” appeared at the end of 2021 as active opponents of vaccination “anti-vaxxers”, who called for “armed struggle,” claiming the creation of paramilitary groups seeking to seize power in the country. They threatened, first of all, teachers and tried kidnap the school principalarresting him at the door of the educational institution.
In court, the man testified that he is a member “communities”which claims to protect the constitution, and that membership in it confers upon it certain “official powers”.
The court found him guilty of incitement to commit crimes, violence and abuse of power. His prison sentence was suspended for three years. He appealed this decision and was released from the courtroom.
