A helicopter piloted by former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera crashed into a lake and he was killed.
This was announced by Carolina Toa, head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Chile, at a press conference on February 6. Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared national mourning in the country and ordered a state funeral.
The disaster occurred on the territory of the Lago Ranco commune. Piñera himself flew the helicopter during heavy rain. He lost control and the aircraft crashed into Lake Ranco.
In addition to the ex-head of state, there were three people in the helicopter. They all survived and made it to shore on their own. Emergency services recovered the body of Sebastian Piñera from the water. writes D.W.
He was 74 years old. Sebastian Piñera served twice as President of Chile – from 2010-2014 and 2018-2022.
