Some 25,000 airport security workers in Germany have been on strike since Thursday morning, threatening the cancellation of thousands of flights in and out of Germany.
The Ver.di union has called a 24-hour strike at German airports, demanding a wage increase of 2.80 euros per hour and an increase in overtime bonuses. According to employers, compliance with the requirements means additional costs of 250 million euros this year alone.
Today’s strikes affect the airports of Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Bremen, Hanover, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Erfurt and Dresden, and only Munich is open among major airports. Searches of workers, passengers, cargo and luggage are very limited or non-existent, depending on the participation of workers in the strike.
For example, all takeoffs from the airports of Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart have already been cancelled. In total, more than 11,000 scheduled flights will not take place today.
