"Screw the bunnies!": artificial intelligence will destroy free riders

Artificial intelligence will begin the fight against “those who like to ride for free” in the subway. The system can detect the movements of people who are trying to pass through the turnstile for nothing.

Evasion of paying for tickets is a frequent and global phenomenon, but in recent years it has been covered not only by the media in our country. Apparently, Britain has decided to take draconian measures to finally put an end to the “hares” phenomenon. We are also talking about all those who “stick” to the law-abiding citizen who punches his ticket at the entrance in order to “join” him to the platform. Of course, there are those who boldly jump over the turnstile. This is where artificial intelligence comes into play.

Trials have already begun at Willesden Green station on the Jubilee Line, but the AI system is expected to be rolled out to other stations on the network, according to UK media reports.

The anti-ticket evasion system consists of camerascontrolled by artificial intelligence, thanks to which they are able to “read” the movements of stowaway passengers, “understand” when a citizen is going to pass through the turnstile “for nothing” and stop such attempts.

According to TfL, revenue losses amount to more than £130 million a year, more than €150 million at current exchange rates, with one in 25 trips unpaid. More than 31,000 fines have been issued since April, with TfL calling for the fine to be increased from £80 to £100. The proposal was submitted to London Mayor Sadiq Khan for approval, but a year has passed and this has not happened, reports carandmotor.gr.

TfL found that the majority of offenses are recorded at “wide turnstiles” designed for people with limited mobility, parents with prams etc. This gates that open and close slower than others which is what many citizens use to get through without paying.

The Jubilee Line, which has tested an artificial intelligence system to combat fare evasion, has the second-highest crime rate of London Underground’s 11 lines. In Greece, they are also thinking about installing appropriate AI equipment in the metro in order to “destroy the birds with one stone.”
