Mass poisoning of lamb at a city festival

Boiled lamb eaten by visitors to a village fair in Elis sent 37 villagers to the local medical center.

Together with other local residents, the guests sat at the festive table in one of the villages where St. George is annually honored and tasted the dishes presented to them. Later, one after another, 37 victims went to the medical center because they felt unwell.

According to Patrisnews, symptoms of food poisoning among residents appeared immediately after they consumed boiled lamb. Currently, the victims have already been discharged from the hospital and are healthy.

According to ilialive, people aged from 15 to 90 years old were admitted to the medical center with the same symptoms of gastroenteritis and severe abdominal pain. The first patient arrived at 1 pm and the last at 8 pm.

One resident who suffered from food poisoning said: “We all ate the same food. It was boiled meat and sweets. After some time, the first symptoms began to appear. Severe malaise, sharp pain in the abdomen. As a result, 37 people ended up in the Health Center with food poisoning. The doctors on duty provided us with first aid, gave us medications, and put on IVs.”

As deputy director Stavros Leventis told ilialive.gr, the first patients were two brothers, 15 and 16 years old, and their mother. “At first we thought it was simple gastroenteritis. But as soon as other patients began to arrive, all from the same village, who, as it was established, were sitting at the same table, we immediately realized that it was food poisoning. The symptoms were intense: abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The patients were immediately provided with the necessary medications and medical care. The patients did not stay in the hospital for long and returned home as soon as they felt better. However, until the drugs worked, they suffered from pain,” concludes Mr. Leventis, noting that if the conditions for preparing or storing meat are inappropriate, there is always a high risk of food poisoning.
