The sea waves carry shoes, refrigerators and other household items to the beaches of Denmark. It’s just forbidden to take them.
Storm Pia caused dozens of containers from the Mayview Maersk merchant ship to fall into the sea. The contents of several of them ended up on the beaches of Denmark. For several days now, since Christmas Eve, all sorts of objects have been drifting at sea – wheels, refrigerators, boots and shoes of all sizes.
Intensive cleanup of the coastline is underway, but the number of floating objects does not appear to be decreasing. And it’s not surprising – after all, 46 containers fell into the sea off the coast of Northern Jutland. Maersk’s head of environment and safety, Ninn Norman Scheuer, laments:
“We are very sorry for the situation. We take full responsibility and will be there until the problem is fixed. But clean-up work must be carried out in collaboration with local authorities who have the relevant knowledge.”
The company announced that the container ship and the people on it were not injured. In accordance with Danish law, the contents of the containers belong to Maersk, so local residents can only gawk at the unusual spectacle – it is prohibited to appropriate the items found.
But local fishermen going out to sea have a hard time – they are afraid of bumping into containers or other objects floating in the water.
