Same-sex couples: what Greeks really think about marriage and childbearing


Recently, the issue of same-sex marriage and childbearing has returned to the public sphere, thanks to the positions of politicians and a bill announced by Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

A social survey conducted by aboutpeople on behalf of Eteron took place in October of this year. 56.2% of respondents answered that agree and probably agree with allowing same-sex couples to marry. 38.9% say they disagree or rather disagree.

Women (63.3%) have a more positive attitude towards marriage of same-sex couples than men (49%), while positive responses predominate in all age categories. The largest percentage was recorded in the age group of 17-24 years (67.7%), and the smallest in the age group of 65 (49.6%).

Regarding the answers to the question of who respondents voted for in the June 2023 elections, SYRIZA voters are in the majority (85.8%), followed by the KKE (Communist Party of Greece) electorate with 79.1%. Voters of other parties are in large percentage negative.

Regarding the birth (adoption) of children by same-sex couples, 37.2% of respondents answer that they agree or rather agree, and 58.6% disagree or rather disagree with this.

Women are also more positive on this issue than men (43.4% versus 30.9%). The only age groups with more positive responses are 17-24 years old (63.4%) and 25-34 years old (52.6%).
