Storm winds blew off the roof of a gas station

Serious problems were caused by a storm wind of up to 90 km/h, recorded at dawn in Thessaloniki.

The northwest wind knocked down a tree that fell on the roof of a gas station located on Lagada Street at the height of Efkarpia and collapsed it. The loud noise, as reported by local website voria.gr, frightened a gas station employee who was at work. As a precaution, he was sent to the hospital by an ECAV ambulance that arrived.

Since dawn, Thessaloniki has reportedly faced many problems and destruction due to strong winds and bad weather. In the morning, the storm’s wind was about 8 points on the Beaufort scale, reaching 106 km/h in places. The wind was so strong that it caused huge waves in the Thermaikos Gulf. At the same time, damage was caused to the destroyer “Strela”, anchored near the Concert Hall. A Coast Guard tugboat arrived at the scene to stabilize the vessel and assess the damage.

Since early morning, the onset of bad weather in Thessaloniki has resulted in falling trees, damage to parked vehicles and infrastructure, road closures, power supply problems and flight cancellations at Macedonia airport. Until this time, the fire service received 150 calls in the Thessaloniki prefecture. Assistance provided: in 82 cases for the removal of fallen tree trunks, in 19 cases for the removal of large objects “blown away by the wind.”

Electricity network workers DEI are on alert to troubleshoot problems. Strong winds brought a drop in air temperature, as the mercury did not exceed +12°C.

The first snowfalls were recorded in the mountains of Western Macedonia, the villages of Nymphea, Pisoderi (Florina), as well as in Vasilitsa (Grevena).
