Another horrific discovery was made by city sewerage crews in northern Evia, who also uncovered human remains during construction work.
Another human skeleton was reportedly found in the center of Istea, during work on the city’s sewerage network, close to where were recently found the remaining five. According to local website evima.gr, police are now conducting an investigation to establish the details of the incident and establish who owns the remains.
The fact that they were preserved under the cement of the city certainly excludes the possibility that, according to the preliminary assessment of experts, they belong to a recent burial. It is currently unclear whether these skeletons are an archaeological find or the remains of those who died in a later historical period – such as World War II or even later.
According to the mayor of Istea Edipsos, Yiannis Kontsias, these are the skeletons that were found at the site, do not have any traces of burial, i.e. any specific ritual, and it is for this reason that it is impossible to determine who they belong to. Of course, according to the mayor, these are those who died before the country was liberated from the Turkish yoke, since it was then that a road was built in this area.
The most likely scenario, based on the depth at which they were found, is that there is a connection with the Ottoman period and possibly with people who died before the 1821 revolution. At the same time, at least for the moment, all this does not resemble a “mass grave”, despite the fact that, judging by historical data, there was an Ottoman cemetery in this area.
