Ouzo and more: the demand for Greek alcoholic drinks abroad


Export of alcoholic beverages from Greece – in which countries and which ones are most in demand.

Invariably, ouzo remains the “hero” of exports, although in the first half of 2023 this alcoholic drink shows an increase in value by 6.02% (+1.7 million euros), but a decrease of 8.3% (-1.1 million kg ) in quantity compared to the same period in 2022.

Export data by quantity and value

According to ΣΕΑΟΠ data, the drop in export volumes is due to the ban on the import and sale of alcoholic beverages in Iraq, which is the second most important area for Greece (20.2% in value and 18.7% in quantity).

The leader in the export of Greek ouzo is Germany (44% of the total volume by value and 49.5% by quantity), and Bulgaria is in third place, after Iraq (17.8% by value and 14.6% by quantity). Next come the Netherlands, Israel, the USA and Cyprus.

According to the same data, over the past five years, ouzo has demonstrated an increase in exports by 50% in value terms and by 12.24% in quantitative terms. The spirit continues to hold a strong position as an export leader, accounting for 62% by value and 69% of total Greek spirits exports in the first half of 2023.

Greek alcoholic beverage exports generally showed an increase in value in the first half of this year after a decline in the first quarter. According to recent Eurostat data processed by ΣΕΑΟΠ, within 27 countries EU and in third countries they recorded an overall increase in value of 10.53% compared to the corresponding period in 2022 (+4.7 million euros). In quantitative terms, the downward trend continues, its overall indicator was -3.05%, writes CNN Greece.

Main consumers

EU27 member countries are consistently the main consumers of Greek alcoholic beverages, accounting for 80% of the total in both value and quantity. Unlike third countries, the export of Greek alcoholic beverages to the EU 27 continues to increase: in value terms by 18.83%, amounting to 39.1 million euros, in quantitative terms – by 5% (14.5 million liters).

Germany continues to be the leading destination, accounting for 44.4% of the quantity (8 million liters) and 39% of the value (19.4 million euros) of the total Greek alcoholic beverages exports. In second place is Bulgaria, supplies to which are constantly growing – by 39% in value terms and by 33% in quantitative terms. Iraq is in 3rd place, despite the consequences of the ban (-32% in quantitative terms), followed by the Netherlands, France, the Czech Republic and Poland.
