Eurostat: 7 out of 10 Greeks aged 18-34 live with their parents

The Eurostat study, which showed that “over-aged children” continue to live with their parents, does not surprise the residents of Greece at all.

Foreigners, residents of other countries, were very surprised by the results of the sociological study and the data presented in the report. Let’s take a look at them too.

As it turns out, “living with parents” does not mean at all that “Greeks are big children” and behave accordingly. Having your own home and an independent wallet is the dream of most modern young people. The average age at which someone in Greece manages to “fly the nest” is estimated to be 30.7 years, while in Europe the figure is 26.5 years!

Many young Greeks prefer the comfort of home and are in no hurry to “get back on their feet.” It is very difficult to be independent in conditions of a protracted crisis and financial instability.

According to Eurostat, 7 out of 10 Greeks aged 18-34 (most of them men) live with their parents, compared with the corresponding average in a list of 26 countries EU does not exceed 49.4%. The average age at which a young person in our country manages to leave the children’s room of his parents’ home exceeds 30 years, while the European average is 26.5 years. The rental price in half of the houses in Attica (48.2%) exceeds 500 euros per month, while even for small apartments up to 50 sq.m. prices start from 400 euros.

According to the Bank of Greece,Apartment prices (in nominal terms) rose 13.9% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023, compared with 11.8% growth in 2022. Prices for new apartments (up to 5 years) in the second quarter of 2023 increased by an average of 13.8%, and for old apartments by 14.1%.

By geographic region, high annual growth rates in apartment prices were recorded in the country’s major urban centers, particularly Thessaloniki (16.4%) and other major cities (14.6%), exceeding the corresponding average growth rates throughout country.
