The ruling Ansar Allah (Houthi) movement in northern Yemen said on Wednesday that it had shot down an American drone in the skies over Yemen’s territorial waters.
“Our air defense systems shot down an American MQ9 aircraft while it was carrying out hostile actions in the airspace over the territorial waters of Yemen as part of American military support for the Israeli entity,” – their military representative Yahya al-Saria said on the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah TV channel.

“Statement by the Yemeni Armed Forces: With the help of the Almighty, our air defenses were able to shoot down an American MQ9 aircraft that was carrying out hostile monitoring and espionage activities in the airspace of Yemen’s territorial waters and as part of American military support for the Israeli entity. With God’s help, it was shot down with appropriate weapons. Armed Forces Yemen reaffirm their legitimate right to defend the country and counter all hostile threats. Hostile movements will not stop the Yemeni armed forces from continuing military operations against the Israeli entity in support of the oppression of the Palestinian people. He noted that “such hostile actions will not become an obstacle to providing military support to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip in the face of Israeli aggression.”
The Houthis have previously announced several times that they have launched missiles at targets in Israel, including attacks on airports in support of the resistance in the Palestinian Gaza Strip. In mid-October, a US warship operating in the Middle East intercepted several missiles off the coast of Yemen, two US officials told CNN at the time. Jordan also announced the downing of Houthi missiles.
The Houthis captured Yemen’s capital Sanaa in 2014 and control large swaths of the country. They are “part of the axis of resistance” against Israel along with Hamas, which is also supported by Tehran.
