Two earthquakes rocked the island of Crete in the southern Aegean Sea

Two earthquakes measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale were recorded on Thursday off the island of Crete in the southern Aegean Sea, the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens said.

The tremors were recorded at intervals of 6 minutes. The first one is at 10.18 and the second one is 10.24 am. The epicenter of the first earthquake was in the sea area 28 km east of the island, the second – 29 km east, midway between Crete and Kasos. There were no reports of casualties or property damage.

These two earthquakes were followed by several more tremors with a magnitude of 1-3 on the Richter scale. Speaking to news site Creta24, seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos offered reassurance and spoke about the usual size of earthquakes in the region. “They don’t cause any problems because they occur in an underwater environment,” Papadopoulos said.
