Young Ukrainian refugees leave Poland


More than half of the Ukrainian refugees under the age of 35 who had been in Poland since the beginning of the war moved to Germany.

According to a study conducted by the EWL Migration Platform and the Center for East European Studies at the University of Warsaw, commissioned by the Office of the Prime Minister of Poland, 53% of refugees who moved from Poland to Germany are people with an average age of 35 years. Only 2% of Ukrainians who moved to Germany were of working age.

Marcin Kołodziejczyk, Director of International Recruitment at the EWL Migration Platform, notes:

“This indicates that it is mainly young people who are leaving for Germany. They are more mobile and ready to find work.”

After the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the German labor market actually became accessible to citizens of this country for the first time. And it’s worth noting writes “European Truth”, Ukrainians attracted attention with their high professional activity and skills:

Every second refugee from Ukraine who moved from Poland to Germany (47%) speaks English, at least at a communicative level.

Every fourth respondent (24%) declares knowledge of the German language. Every fifth person, or 22%, knows Polish.

The main reasons for the “migration” of Ukrainians to Germany are the presence of friends and acquaintances there, attractive social benefits, and high earnings. 36% of respondents came to Germany with a child, every tenth – with two children.

The survey involved 400 Ukrainians who moved to Germany from Poland. The study was conducted in August 2023.

The EWL migration platform brings together foreigners looking for work in European countries – Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania and others. Since 2018, together with the Center for Eastern European Studies at the University of Warsaw, EWL has been conducting sociological research among foreigners who have found employment in the countries EU.
