Police have arrested three Bulgarians for their involvement in a telephone scam in northern Greece that targeted elderly people under the pretext of injuring their relatives in alleged road accidents.
In total, authorities have uncovered four completed and three attempted frauds registered over the past 24 hours in the cities of Serres, Kilkis and Alexandroupolis.
Those arrested were involved in two separate cases and acted as money and jewelry collectors from their alleged victims. In one of them – a 51-year-old man and his 45-year-old accomplice, in the second – a 37-year-old man.
In particular, the first two were arrested in Kilkis; 16 gold guineas worth more than 7,000 euros, which they had previously extorted from an elderly woman, were found in their possession. According to the victim’s complaint, she put the guineas in a bag, which she threw from the balcony of her house, handing it over to the criminal.
The same duo, as it turned out during the police investigation, had previously tried to take money from three other women in the same area, and they apparently had another fraud on their record – in Serres, involving jewelry and money worth €1,000.
As for the third criminal, according to the police, he was arrested in Serres, where he robbed an elderly woman of 17,000 euros – the amount that was found on him. He previously extorted 7,000 euros from an elderly woman in Alexandroupoli.
Police continue to investigate both to establish the identity of the accomplices and their possible involvement in other similar criminal acts. Those arrested will be handed over to the appropriate prosecutors for prosecution.
