Can Ukrainian pensioners be mobilized?

In Ukraine, it was proposed to raise the age limit for reservists in the mobilization reserve for service in the Armed Forces to 70 years. A military expert on Apostrophe TV explains how necessary this is and whether it means that pensioners will be sent to the front line.

According to Andrei Kramarov, an officer of the Air Force Reserve of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, this is absurd, quotes edition:

“About raising the conscription age to 70 years. For me personally, this is not even parents, but grandfathers. Mobilizing citizens of this age is absolutely wrong.”

In some cases, calling up pensioners may be appropriate, but in general it is nonsense. According to the expert, it is clear that each person’s reaction and audiovisual abilities differ with age. At a young age, a person is easier to teach, and it is physically easier for him on the battlefield:

“Of course, there are people about 60 years old with serious experience of participating in hostilities. And yes, this person, based on his exclusively empirical experience, can do a little more on the battlefield. But these are isolated cases, and we are now talking about a general age group.”

Previously, the media, in particular the publication today.ua, wrote that the Verkhovna Rada proposed to raise the age limit for conscription into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. If deputies support the bill, men over 70 will also be able to serve.

Mobilization continues in Ukraine, within the framework of which men 18-60 years old liable for military service are being drafted into the army. People’s representatives proposed lifting age restrictions. Currently, the Armed Forces of Ukraine can accommodate persons up to 65-70 years of age. Deputies want to remove the age threshold if the fighter has a desire to continue defending his homeland.

According to Article 22 of the Law “On Military Duty and Military Service”, the age limit for Ukrainian military personnel during a special period is:

• 60 years – for privates, sergeants and senior officers, as well as for junior and senior officers;
• 65 years – for senior officers.

Military personnel can extend their service life for another five years, up to a maximum of 70. Parliament plans to remove these restrictions.
