A group of UN specialists was sent by the organization’s High Commissioner for Human Rights to collect more information about Russia’s violation of the laws and customs of war in the village of Groza, Kupyansky district, Kharkov region. The UN noted that representatives of the human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine have already established the names of 35 dead: 19 women, 15 men and an 8-year-old boy, as well as the names of five women and one man who were injured. According to authorities, among the dead was a Ukrainian serviceman who had attended his father’s wake. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights noted:

“This strike is one of the deadliest since February 24, 2022, but, of course, far from the only one. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, who saw with his own eyes the terrible consequences of such strikes, is deeply shocked and condemns this murder. He sent field team to speak with survivors and gather more information. Before the Russian invasion, the population of the village was approximately 300. It is unknown how many residents still lived there, but it is clear that due to the large number of deaths, all residents of this small community suffered. “We know that at least eight families had more than one relative killed in the attack. We reiterate that international humanitarian law, in particular the rules of engagement, must be strictly observed.”

Experts visited the village of Groza in the Kharkov region, said Denise Brown, coordinator for humanitarian issues in Ukraine, the UN press service reports. Both were in Poland before the invasion, but after the start of the war they volunteered for the military registration and enlistment office. The father was fatally wounded in the neck after three days of fighting. He was buried in a military cemetery in the Dnepropetrovsk region. In June, my son left the service for health reasons. The Kharkov prosecutor’s office admits that Russian troops could have struck a cafe in the village of Groza, thinking that there were Ukrainian soldiers there, but there were only civilians there. A three-day mourning period has been declared in the Kharkov region on October 6-8.
