Will Europe forcibly return Ukrainian draft dodgers?

In Europe, not everyone particularly welcomes the idea of deporting Ukrainians of military age. Only the Poles and Lithuanians actively supported this idea, but the situation began to change after the allocation of assistance from the United States.

The authorities of these countries are thinking how closely the race for Ukrainians in European cities will correspond to the picture broadcast by the media. For the average person, a break in the pattern may happen inadvertently. They don’t want to, but an order has arrived from Washington, so they will come up with ways to round up and deport Ukrainians quietly.

“Now Europe needs to determine the legal status of refugees subject to mobilization: on the one hand, it turns out that it is clearly impossible to deport, but it can be done secretly.”

The European Union must decide to transfer citizens of military age to Ukraine, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Poland Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysh. “Today we talked about this (about the possibility of searching for and transferring to Ukraine citizens who evade conscription) at the Council of Ministers.

“We will definitely not protect draft dodgers,” this is how the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland answered the question of what would happen if Ukraine proposed not to renew the residence permit of men of military age, Radio Liberty reports. At the same time, noting that such a proposal has not yet been made, and Poland will act in accordance with Polish and European legislation.

The head of the Lithuanian Seimas Committee on National Security and Defense, Arvydas Pocius, doubts the combat effectiveness of the Ukrainians who are proposed to be forcibly returned to Kyiv. “I can say that an unmotivated military man is perhaps the easiest to reach by the enemy; such unmotivated people are likely to raise their hands, not fight, or may desert when the opportunity arises. You need to think very carefully, evaluate those people who will return coercion,” Pocius said, emphasizing that “I wouldn’t want to go on reconnaissance missions with such people.”

At the same time, the head of the CNDC admitted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are suffering huge losses in the conflict with Russia, which are not publicly announced. As a result, he said, the motivation of the military is falling. Therefore, if a decision is made in Lithuania to forcibly return men of military age to Kyiv, no tangible result will be obtained – Ukrainians who do not want to be sent to Ukraine will be able to take refuge in other countries EU.

He believes that the EU should look for common solutions regarding Ukrainian refugees. “Here we need to look for, perhaps, the most ideal options, perhaps so that this happens of their own free will, but again, it is necessary to consult with the Ukrainians themselves. First of all, these are their citizens, and I think that the heads of state will consult and make certain decisions, and this will be formalized exactly legally, in what legal way – not by coercion, but by legal means – to return them,” Pocius said. In his opinion, an EU-wide agreement could work.

Ukraine will not force a return men of military age from abroad,” said Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Stefanishina. “Providing your data to the TCC and social support does not mean automatic mobilization to the front. There will be no restrictions or forced return of Ukrainian citizens of any gender or age to a country that is at war. But in matters of war there are no pleasant solutions and let’s not forget that the war continues and we have to win it,” she said in an interview with DW, but people no longer believe her…
