Greece’s trade with Russia – wheat in the top three


Greek Statistical Service Elstat reported that in July 2023, Greece’s imports of goods from Russia decreased in value terms by 79.9% compared to July 2022.

In the first 7 months of this year, it decreased by 62.4%, and Russian wheat entered the top three imports in July, writes GreekReporter. The Elstat report states:

“In July 2023, the value of Greece’s imports from Russia amounted to 210.5 million euros, which is 79.9% less than in July 2022 (1.047 billion euros). The value of Greece’s exports to Russia in July 2023 was 9 million euros.” “which is 6.7% less than in July 2022 (9.6 million euros). The trade balance between Greece and Russia was negative in July 2023, with a deficit of 201.5 million euros.”

Russian gas leads in imports – 172.83 million euros. In second place is raw aluminum, 27.5 million euros. Wheat took third place in the top three. According to Elstat data, in July Greece purchased 15.8 thousand tons of wheat and meslin* from Russia for 4.23 million euros. In statistics for 2022, wheat was not among the top 3 Russian goods imported by Greece.

Over the seven months of 2023, Greece imported goods from Russia worth 1.699 billion euros, which is 62.4% less than in the same period in 2022 (4.52 billion euros). The volume of exports from Greece to Russia in January-July amounted to 59.2 million euros, that is, 15.3% less than in the corresponding period in 2022, when goods worth 69.8 million euros were exported. The trade deficit between Greece and Russia in January-July 2023 amounted to 1.64 billion euros.

*Meslin is a mixture of wheat and rye, usually in a two to one ratio.
