ΕΛΣΤΑΤ: rapid decline in fertility in Greece


A decrease of 10.3% was noted by the Greek statistical office regarding the birth rate in Greece last year. A total of 76,541 births (39,558 boys and 36,983 girls) compared to 2021: 85,346 newborns, of which 43,998 were boys and 41,348 girls.

The birth rate does not include stillbirths, which numbered 446 in 2022, down 1.5% from 453 in 2021.

According to ΕΛΣΤΑΤindex mortality in 2022, 140,801 people died (70,802 men and 69,999 women), which is 2.2% less than in 2021 – 143,923 (73,420 men and 70,503 women). The number of deaths of infants under one year of age was 239, which reduced the infant mortality rate (under one year of age per 1,000 live births) from 3.48% in 2021 to 3.12% in 2022.

Also, according to the statistics bureau, in 2022 43,355 marriages (21,381 religious and 21,974 civil, in the mayor’s office), an increase of 6.4% compared to 2021, when there were 40,759 (18,487 religious and 22,272 civil).

Quantity cohabitation agreements reached 13,157, which is 13.9% more than in 2021, when there were 11,550. divorces amounted to 14,477, showing an increase of 4% compared to 2021 (13,921 divorces). In terms of type of divorce, eight out of ten granted in the last five years are by mutual agreement.

Issued in 2022 11,638 divorces by mutual consent (80.4%) and 1,906 contested divorces (13.2%). At the same time, for 933 divorces (6.4%) the type of divorce was not specified.

The majority of divorce decisions involve people aged 40–44 (men 17.8% and women 20%), followed by people aged 45–49 (men 17.6% and women 16.4%). 65.6% of divorces filed in 2022 concern marriages that lasted more than 10 years (9,500 divorces).

The divorce rate per 100 marriages was 33.4% in 2022, up from 34.2% in 2021, 41.2% in 2020, 32.1% in 2019 and 32.8% in 2018.
