Ukraine: international war sponsor status suspended for Hungarian bank and Greek oil carriers

To unlock 500 million euros from the war fund EU Ukraine made concessions: it suspended the decision on Greek companies and a Hungarian bank.

It concerned the inclusion of the Hungarian OTP Bank and five Greek carriers, whom Kyiv accused of illegally transporting Russian oil bypassing the price ceiling, in the list of international sponsors of the war, writes EUROPEAN Pravda. Among the Greek companies: mmDynacom Tankers Management (DTM), Delta Tankers LTD, Thenamaris Ships Management Inc., Minerva Marine, TMC Tankers LTD.

The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption announced the suspension of its status as an international war sponsor on Friday, September 29. Without specifying details, on the NAPC website appeared message:

“This decision was made based on the results of negotiations between representatives of the Agency and representatives of companies and governments of these countries on the termination of cooperation with the Russian Federation.”

Let us remember that Budapest has repeatedly demanded this decision. The NAPC directly explained that they hope in response to Hungary’s unblocking of a tranche of 500 million euros from the European Peace Fund and Greece’s refusal to block the future package of EU sanctions aimed at reducing the ability of the Russian Federation to continue the war.

At the same time, the exclusion of Greek companies and a Hungarian bank from the list of international sponsors of the war, NAPC emphasizes, will depend on the fulfillment of conditions regarding cooperation with Russia.

In May, the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption of Ukraine announced that it had added OTP Bank, the largest Hungarian bank, to the list of war sponsors due to the position of its management to continue operating in the Russian Federation and the actual recognition of the so-called “DPR” https://rua.gr/ “LPR”.

After this, Budapest said that due to the inclusion of OTP Bank in the list of war sponsors, it would be “very difficult” for Budapest to agree with the EU on new sanctions against Russia, and also that they would block the allocation of new tranches from the European Peace Fund.
