Tunnels of Athens "come out of the darkness"

Excellent urban lighting conditions will be ensured by new remote-controlled lighting fixtures that will be installed in sections of underground roads and tunnels in Athens.

The lighting system in these urban infrastructure structures of Athens is outdated and unsuitable for ensuring road safety, so it needs to be updated and equipped with lighting devices of new technologies.

In his speech at the “1st Conference on Energy Saving” (“1ο Συνέδριο Energy Save”), the head of the Metropolitan Infrastructure Management Directorate for the Attica region, Panagiotis Kariotis, touched on this problem, noting that it will be solved through a project that has reached the implementation stage.

In particular, the speaker noted that all underground tunnels (intended for the movement of vehicles) in Athens have yellow lighting (sodium lamps), which cannot be adjusted based on external conditions (weather, day-evening).

“That is, when there is a lot of light outside the tunnel, the light emission inside it should be maximum. However, when evening comes, the lighting should be minimal,” Mr. Kariotis characteristically noted, adding that the lighting at both the entrance and exit of the tunnel should also be adjusted in accordance with existing standards.

The project that brings the underground passages of Attica out of the darkness is the “Supply of LED luminaires to replace the existing lighting fixtures in the underground passages of vehicles managed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (ΔΙ.ΔΙ.Μ.Υ.)”. The project budget will be 6.7 million euros. Financing comes from the Reconstruction Fund (Ταμείο Ανάκαμψης).

The project concerns 31 tunnels, a total of 1,362 lamps will be replaced. In particular, it is planned to install lighting controlled by a SCADA system, a control-supervision system and remote data transmission using photometers that will regulate the lighting level depending on external conditions.

“The goal is for all the tunnels to be like Kakia Skala, that is, very cold light, giving excellent visibility,” Mr. Kariotis explained during his speech.

Let us remind you that the Attica region has already completed maintenance work on the underground passages on the street. Hamosternas, Athenas, Kifisias, Thevon, Kymi and Mesogeion avenues.
