During the 67th session of the IAEA General Conference, a resolution was approved for the immediate return of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to the full control of Ukraine.
Resolution on nuclear safety in Ukraine, reports press service of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, was nominated by Canada, Finland and Costa Rica. The demand was supported by 69 countries.
The resolution calls on the Russian Federation to immediately withdraw all military and other unauthorized personnel from the Zaporizhia NPP and return the plant to the full control of the competent authorities of Ukraine, in accordance with the existing license issued by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine.
The document contains a requirement to provide the IAEA with the ability to ensure the safe and secure operation of the plant and to effectively and efficiently implement safety guarantees.
Ukraine has been elected to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency along with 10 other states, the IAEA said in a statement published on Thursday, September 28. quotes dw:
“Representatives of 11 countries were elected to the IAEA Board of Governors, consisting of 35 members, for the period 2023-2024. The following states became the newly elected members of the Council: Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ecuador, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, The Netherlands, Paraguay, Spain and Ukraine.”
The Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko stated following the voting results:
“We are grateful to our partners, to each country for their voice in support of compliance with nuclear and radiation safety guarantees. The admission of Ukraine to the IAEA Board of Governors, as well as the adoption of a resolution calling for the return of our Zaporizhia NPP to the control of Ukraine is proof that the civilized world is with us” .
The resolution demands that free access to all premises of the plant be provided to IAEA observers permanently stationed at the Zaporizhia NPP. Six countries voted against it, including Russia, China and Iran. 32 countries, including Pakistan and South Africa, abstained. 69 countries supported the resolution.
The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the publication notes, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been under occupation since the beginning of March 2022. In September 2023, the IAEA confirmed its mining.
