In a statement issued in response to the nomination of Stefanos Kasselakis to the leadership of Syriza, the head of the financial department of the Prime Minister’s Office, Alexis Patelis, said that “he is also married to a man.”
In essence, SYRIZA and New Democracy tried to prove, if not which party is more “gay,” then certainly which party is more friendly to the LGBTQ+ community and has in its ranks many men married to other representatives of the powerful. These are “special” situations in the country’s public life that clearly call into question the appropriateness of this “gay competition.”
In particular, Alexis Patelis, speaking in the “First Program” (Πρώτο Πρόγραμμα ΕΡΤ), referred to the fact that the new president of SYRIZA speaks openly about his sexual orientation and stated: “What I found interesting, as you know, I am also married abroad to my partner, that the topic of discussion for Mr. Kasselakis was not his sexual orientation, but everything else. The fact that he was wearing a short-sleeved shirt, whether he had breakfast, whether he drank coffee, and we have a new situation where the leader of the opposition is married abroad in a relationship that is not recognized by the Greek legal system.”
On whether the issue of same-sex marriage would be brought before Parliament, he said: “The Prime Minister has said that he believes in marriage equality and he will take this issue to Parliament. Obviously, this is his decision waiting in the wings, and I think our society has shown that this is not the number one issue that everyone cares. I would say that people don’t care at all. Question number one is the question of rising prices in supermarkets. That’s what we need to focus on. And the issue of marriage equality is an issue that will come.”
PS Until a few months ago, being LGBTQ+ was taboo in once Christian and Orthodox Greece. But after a “college guy” with an American mentality arrived from the USA, worked for Joe Biden and Goldman Sachs, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, married in the USA to a man who is “on friendly terms” with large capitalist groups around the world, suddenly became the head of the left-wing party SYRIZA, everything went to hell.
We are waiting for a wave of statements about being LGBTQ+ from leading politicians and government officials in Greece, because now it is not only fashionable, but is now clearly a ticket to big politics in Greece.
