The media reported that two residents of Thessaloniki illegally detained ten immigrants and beat them with sticks in order to extort money.
The migrants were found in an abandoned building in Dendropotamos in Thessaloniki. A 33-year-old man and his 38-year-old sister were arrested in this case. According to the APE agency, they belong to a group that is involved in the illegal smuggling of refugees and migrants from Evros. According to police, the ten released foreigners came from Iran, Syria, Nepal and Afghanistan.
According to the law enforcement authorities: “The coordinated actions and use of information by the staff of the Thessaloniki Foreigners’ Office led to the location and release of ten foreigners who were being held against their will in an abandoned building in the Dendropotamos area.” As noted, the migrants did not have identification documents (or travel documents for crossing the border). The unfortunate people were kept in inhumane, unsanitary conditions.
A case has been opened against those detained by the Agios Athanasios Immigration Department. The brother and sister are accused of creating a criminal organization, kidnapping, illegal detention and extortion. The vehicle used to transport illegal immigrants was confiscated. Those arrested were taken to the competent judicial authorities.
