A 63-year-old shepherd was hospitalized after being attacked by a bear on the afternoon of September 20 in the area of ”Agia Apostoli”, a mountain community of Mercada in the municipality of Makrakomi.
How reports LamiaReport, a man was looking for one of his animals near a barn and followed the incessant barking of his dogs near a spring. The bear attack occurred at approximately 19:00, the animal seriously injured his face, after which he ran away, probably afraid of the dogs.
The shepherd’s wife and hunters who were in the area (boar hunting is allowed on Wednesday) took care of transporting the victim to Karpenisi Hospital, where he received stitches.
The publication contacted the head of the community, Dimitris Alexiou, who confirmed the man’s injury and said that, according to the testimonies of hunters, they recently saw a mother bear with her cub wandering along the eastern slopes of Veluchi.
The Sperchiada Police Department is conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident to make sure it was a bear attack, as they have not been encountered in certain areas so far.
