Greek woman dies of botulism after dining at restaurant, 12 more people in hospital

Botulism has caused the death of a Greek woman who was on holiday in Bordeaux in France, French health authorities said.

According to French media, a visitor to a catering establishment ended up in the hospital a few hours after lunch at the Tchin Tchin Wine Bar restaurant, located in the very center of Bordeaux.

Her husband and father, who were also sitting at the same table, were hospitalized in serious condition. At the same time, at least ten more people appear to have been poisoned and hospitalized. The attending doctors report that their condition is critical. In particular, seven were hospitalized in the intensive care unit.

“All cases of poisoning with a dangerous toxin were recorded in the same store in Bordeaux from Monday, September 4 to Sunday, September 10, 2023. All of them consumed (canned) sardines,” the French authorities emphasize.

It is noted that the possibility of infection of other people who dined at the same restaurant should not be ruled out. For this reason, authorities have urged anyone experiencing symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, blurred vision, dry mouth and paralysis to seek medical attention immediately.

“All hospitalized patients received an antidote,” said Benjamin Clouzot, a doctor in the intensive care unit of a clinic in Bordeaux.
