The US warned today that arms transfers from North Korea to Russia could be a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
“We, of course, have tightened sanctions against organizations that finance Russia’s military actions, we will continue to strengthen these sanctions and will not hesitate to introduce new ones,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
Earlier, the Pentagon confirmed the fact of Kim’s trip to Russia. “We are expecting some kind of meeting, and judging by the information we have, Kim Jong-un is going to Russia.”said Brigadier General Pat Ryder, a Department of Defense spokesman.
Ryder did not provide details, but said the United States is concerned that North Korea is considering providing material support to Russia. North Korea and Russia confirmed this morning that a meeting between the two leaders will take place “in the next few days.”
Kim’s armored train “appears to be on its way” to Russia, most likely to Vladivostok, where Putin is also arriving to attend tomorrow’s economic forum.
However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that a meeting between the two leaders is not planned within the framework of this forum. The Kremlin statement said only that Kim’s trip is being carried out “at the invitation of the President of Russia.”
North Korean news agency KCNA reported without elaboration that “Dear Comrade Kim Jong-un will meet and talk with Comrade Putin during his visit.”
