Gypsies are looting houses abandoned due to floods


Roma are caught looting in the flood-affected areas of Volos, Magnisia and Trikala (Thessaly, Central Greece). Police have stepped up patrols.

Police arrested four people on Sunday for stealing an electric stove, refrigerator and bed from houses destroyed by Cyclone Daniel. Two citizens took advantage of the pain and suffering of the flood victims and tried to steal household electrical appliances from the victims.

According to a local publication taxydromos.gr, two Roma – 38 and 34 years old – were detained near the city of Volos. Early Sunday morning, they approached a 43-year-old woman’s home and stole a refrigerator and stove, which, along with other pieces of furniture, had been temporarily left on the sidewalk to dry out so they could clear out the flooded house. The police were called to the scene, detained two criminals and returned the electrical appliances to the owner.
