Cyclone Daniel: more than 2,800 rescue operations carried out


In total, from Tuesday, September 5 to 7 a.m. this Saturday, September 9, according to the fire service, 2,806 rescue operations took place – evacuations of people who were taken to safe places.

At the same time, during the same period, the fire department’s operations center received 7,687 calls, which mainly related to pumping out water, removing fallen trees and evacuating people from affected areas.

In particular 5427 calls were recorded in the Thessaly region, of which:

  • There have been 2,272 calls in Magnesia, with 790 water pumping operations carried out so far and 630 people transported to safety.
  • In Larisa, there were 670 calls, 193 water pumping operations were carried out and 190 people were transported to safe places.
  • In Karditsa, there were 1,480 calls, 310 water pumping operations were carried out and 710 people were evacuated.
  • In Trikala, there were 885 calls and 143 water pumping actions, with 610 people brought to safety.
  • There have been 120 calls on Skiathos, with 28 water pumping operations carried out so far and 35 people brought to safety.

In the Central Greece region, 923 calls were recorded, of which:

  • In areas of northern Evia, 115 calls were made, 38 water pumping operations were carried out, 12 fallen tree trunks were removed and 9 people were brought to safety.
  • In Domoko and Lamia (Phthiotis) 720 calls, 315 water pumpings, 142 people were taken to safe places.
  • In Thebes and Livadia (Boeotia) 22 calls were received. 19 water pumping operations were carried out and 1 person was brought to safety.

In the Central Macedonia region, 40 calls were recorded, of which:

  • In Thessaloniki, 1 water pumping, 10 tree cuttings and 2 large items were removed.
  • In Halkidiki, 14 trees were cut down and 2 large objects were removed.
  • 1 fallen tree was removed in Serres.
  • In Katerini (Pieria) 2 water pumpings were carried out.

In the Peloponnese region there are 147 calls, of which:

  • In Spetses there were 12 requests for help, 10 water pumpings were carried out from flooded premises.
  • In Epidaurus – 40 calls, 24 measures to pump out water, 6 fallen trees were removed and 8 people were transported to safe places.
  • In Kranidi, 80 calls were made, 71 water pumpings were carried out, 7 people were taken to safe places.
  • In Monemvasier, 5 water pumpings were carried out.
  • In Corinth, 2 water pumpings were carried out.

There are 1150 calls in the Attica region, of which:

  • In total, 1,026 calls were received and 716 actions were carried out to pump out water, 75 trees were removed and 44 people were taken to safe places.
  • There were 124 requests for help in Aegina and Angistri. 49 water pumpings were carried out.

From Thursday to yesterday Friday, September 7-8, 420 air rescue operations were carried out using 10 helicopters, 3 of which were provided by the Greek Orthodox Church.

On Friday 8 September, 310 air rescue operations were carried out using 20 helicopters, 7 of which were provided by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation and 3 by Switzerland, under bilateral agreements. At the same time, air assets carried food, water, medicine and bedding to the affected areas throughout the day and until recently.

It is noted that everything Civil protection forces remain on general alert. At the same time, the fire service calls on all citizens to be especially careful and conscientiously follow the instructions of the competent authorities.
