What to pay attention to when driving in the rain

Cyclone Daniel brought numerous challenges. And one of the most important is the difficulty of moving by car during rain.

Driving in such conditions requires caution, forethought and good condition of the vehicle. Since wet road surfaces are especially dangerous, the first thing you should pay attention to is the condition of your tires.

If you have “bald tires” (tires that are smooth from long use), the grip on the asphalt is zero, which increases the likelihood of an accident, as the braking distance increases. Correct air pressure in tires is also important and should be measured periodically.

The best way to avoid skidding and “sliding without brakes” is low speed. This provides more contact of the tread with the road, as mentioned above. On the other side, the driver has a better view of the road surface and more time to react, especially when driving on a country road. Heavy rains on many sections of the road can lead to subsidence or destruction of the road surface, and large objects (stones) being carried onto the roadway. Low speed helps to stop the car in time.

Driving in the rain requires careful handling of the steering wheel and engine. On a wet road, the steering wheel turns easier and does not “submit” to sharp turns. Wherein braking will be carried out at a distance of up to three times greater than on a dry road.

What should we do if we are preparing for a trip while it is raining? When traveling in the rain and getting into the car, keep in mind that the shoes will slide on the pedals first. Good preliminary rub them on the mat.

When driving, the main headlights must be on, the taillights must be in good working order, as well as the brake lights and turn indicators. Also, the wipers must be in working (and good) condition. Skidding is a common occurrence when driving in rainy weather.. If your car skids, do not brake suddenly.

Heavy rain may overload the wipersand then there will be no good visibility. When visibility is very limited, we first reduce the speed, and if visibility is still poor, we stop the car in a safe place.

If your only option is side of the roadstop as far away from the roadway as possible and wait until the storm passes. Turn on your high beams and your hazard warning lights at the same time to warn other drivers.

Finally, it is important for the driver to know that wet road surface hides traps. Since water is everywhere, the driver cannot determine whether in front of him is a shallow puddle or a gap or a pothole. And then an accident cannot be avoided.

In general, think carefully about whether you need to go somewhere in such bad weather. Perhaps by rescheduling your trip, you will save both your life and the lives of other road users.
